The Payne Institute for Public Policy, Mines DI&A, and Mines Athletics are pleased to host a webinar book launch featuring Johnnie Johnson and Dr. Michael E. Webber on their new collaboration “From Athletics to Engineering: 8 Ways to Support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for All” on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 from 10:00am – 11:00am (MT).

The daily drumbeat of personal experience and news headlines make clear that there is a need for society to make real progress toward diversity, equity, and inclusion for all. But the topics are rife with nuance and many people and organizations don’t even know where to begin. While there are many terrific books written by experts that lay out the problem and suggest solutions, Johnnie and Michael provide a playbook for progress based on firsthand life experience. This book fills a need by presenting a unique, actionable approach for success in an accessible way to a wide audience. Using clear, accessible examples from their experience, this easy-to-read book presents actions readers can take to make a positive contribution on diversity, equity and inclusion. Though many anecdotes are pulled from athletics and engineering, the lessons they offer are applicable to all sectors of society and can foster individual growth and collective harmony. With no-nonsense explanations and straightforward writing, this book is quick to read and simple to internalize.

Johnnie Johnson serves as President and CEO of World Class Coaches®, one of the world’s premier executive coaching companies. He spent nine years in real estate sales where he produced more than 100 transactions a year as one of the nation’s top producing real estate agents. As the team’s #1 draft pick, Johnnie excelled for ten years in the National Football League as an All-Pro safety for the Los Angeles Rams. He was a two-time consensus All-American at the University of Texas at Austin and is a member of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.

Dr. Michael E. Webber serves as the Chief Science and Technology Officer at ENGIE, a global energy & infrastructure services company. Webber is also the Josey Centennial Professor in Energy Resources at the University of Texas at Austin. Webber’s expertise spans research and education at the convergence of engineering, policy, and commercialization on topics related to innovation, energy, and the environment. His latest book, Power Trip: the Story of Energy, was published in 2019 by Basic Books with a 6-part companion series on PBS. His first book, Thirst for Power: Energy, Water and Human Survival, which addresses the connection between earth’s most valuable resources and offers a hopeful approach toward a sustainable future, was published in 2016 by Yale Press and was converted into a documentary. He was selected as a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers and as a member of the 4th class of the Presidential Leadership Scholars, a leadership training program organized by Presidents George W. Bush and William J. Clinton. Webber has authored more than 400 publications, holds 6 patents, and serves on the advisory board for Scientific American. Webber holds a B.S. and B.A. from UT Austin, and M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.
