Elkem Iceland, a company started by the Icelandic government, is a manufacturer of high quality FeSi (Ferrosilicon), for use in steel production around the world. Elkem employs 160 employees and with 3 furnaces, has a capacity of 120 m.t. (Metric Tons) per year. Like most industries in Iceland it is powered primarily by geothermal and hydroelectric energy. Elkem is often praised for its employee retention rate, over two thirds of the staff have worked there for over 10 years.
