Please join the Mines Integrated CCUS Initiative and the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines as we welcome Lee Beck, CCUS Policy Innovation Director, Clean Air Task Force, Samantha McCulloch, Head of CCUS Unit, International Energy Agency, and Michael Weiner, Associate Director, Carbon Utilization Research Council, presenting a webinar titled Policy Perspective for CCUS on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 9:00am (MT).

There is unprecedented interest and momentum in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), carbon management, negative emissions and deep decarbonization worldwide. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine have identified carbon sequestration as one of society’s grand challenges, and multiple national labs and the U.S. Department of Energy have significant ongoing work in the area. Most recently the 116th Congress affirmed the importance of these technologies by authorizing more than $6 billion of CCUS-related spending over 5 years in the Energy Act of 2020.

The Colorado School of Mines is one of the world’s top technical research universities in areas related to energy, natural resources and the environment, and is actively engaged in multiple aspects of the CCUS chain with more than 40 faculty members of the Integrated CCUS Initiative (ICI). The ICI and the Global Energy Future Initiative is excited to highlight this research amid the accelerating pace of activity in the CCUS space and is proud to announce that March is CCUS Month at Mines! Join us for CCUS-related content including webinars, podcast interviews with Colorado businesses doing CCUS, and a showcase of Mines research.

Lee Beck is the Clean Air Task Force’s CCUS Policy Innovation Director and leads the environmental organization’s work on carbon capture policy in the US and Europe. She came to CATF in mid-2020 from the Global CCS Institute where she led the Institute’s advocacy in North America. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center and has worked in a variety of clean energy industries. Lee is originally from Germany.

Samantha McCulloch is the Head of the CCUS Unit at the Paris-based International Energy Agency. Her team provides leading analysis and insights on the development and deployment of carbon capture, utilisation and storage technologies. Samantha is a lead author of several IEA publications, including the 2020 Energy Technology Perspectives Special Report: CCUS in Clean Energy Transitions.

Mike Weiner is a Director of Governmental Issues at Van Ness Feldman LLP in Washington, D.C. He also serves as the Associate Director for the Carbon Utilization Research Council (CURC), an industry coalition focused on technology solutions in support of responsible fossil energy use. On behalf of CURC, he assists with the development of policies that promote the deployment of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies and advocates for those policies before federal policymakers. Mike holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Public Administration degree from George Washington University.

The Integrated CCUS Initiative and the Global Energy Future Initiative is excited to announce that March is CCUS Month at Mines!
