Moshe Mohutsiwa
Payne Institute Africa Critical Minerals and Energy Program Manager and Research Associate

Moshe Mohutsiwa is the Program Manager for Africa – Mineral and Energy for the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines. His professional experience spans mining production (Surface and Underground), management consulting, and mergers and acquisitions. He is currently pursuing a PhD in the Energy and Mineral Economics Division at the Colorado School of Mines.

In 2015, Moshe founded a junior mining company in South Africa, growing it to more than 200 employees and expanding its operations into Ghana. The company’s primary commodities of interest include coal and gold, with planned diversification into industrial minerals and energy.

During his tenure as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, Moshe led optimization and cost-improvement studies across multiple global jurisdictions, including Indonesia, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Mozambique. He later transitioned into investment banking with Standard Bank of South Africa, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions within the mining and metals sector.

Moshe holds a BSc and MSc in Mining Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, as well as a Master of Management in Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation from Wits Business School. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and a member of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). He further holds a Mine Managers Certificate of Competency for Fiery Mines.
