Please join the Mines Global Energy Future Initiative and the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines as we welcome Advisory Board Member Dr. Daniel M. Kammen,  Professor of Energy, University of California, Berkeley, presenting a webinar titled Climate Justice and Global Decarbonization on Thursday, February 4, 2021, from 11:00am – 12:00pm (MT).

The need to entirely decarbonize our economies is now abundantly clear, and urgent. To achieve this massive ‘new industrial revolution’ we will need to develop and deploy not only new technologies, but also policies, social and behavioral incentives and mechanisms that span all aspects of energy and other resource consumption. Almost entirely absent from this monumental task has been to address the massive disparities that exist in society across racial, gender, and income levels. Decarbonizing our energy mix can be a tool to enable social justice, and I will argue that the transition to a sustainable energy system is impossible without making social and racial justice an integral component of the enterprise.

Dr. Daniel M. Kammen is a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, with parallel appointments in the Energy and Resources Group where he serves as Chair, the Goldman School of Public Policy where he directs the Center for Environmental Policy, and the department of Nuclear Engineering. Kammen is the founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL; http://rael.berkeley.edu). He served as Science Envoy in the Obama State Department and has worked at the World Bank. Kammen was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2020. Kammen has been a Coordinating Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1999. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Payne Institute for Public Policy.
