VNF Detects One of the Largest Ferrosilicon Plants in the World

Elkem Iceland, a company started by the Icelandic government, is a manufacturer of high quality FeSi (Ferrosilicon), for use in steel production around the world. Elkem employs 160 employees and with 3 furnaces, has a capacity of 120 m.t. (Metric Tons) per year. Like most industries in Iceland it is powered primarily by geothermal and hydroelectric energy. Elkem is often praised for its employee retention rate, over two thirds of the staff have worked there for over 10 years. Pictured is the VIIRS Nightfire (VNF) detections over the month of February, 2020. The hottest point recorded was 972K (1,290 °F), on February 13th.

Forest Fire in Philippines

For the past week forest fires have been ravaging the Benguet province in the Philippines. Fire crews have been combating the blaze since last Tuesday. The fires have been estimated to have destroyed at least a thousand hectares of pine forest. The highest temperature recorded by VIIRS Nightfire was on February 25 at 1878 deg. K (2921 deg. F). The fires have caused the closure of Mt. Pulag and surrounding areas. Pictured are the detection of fires by VIIRS over the one week period.
