Please join Network 20/20 and  the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines as we welcome Dr. Morgan Bazilian on a virtual seminar presenting the Geopolitics of Critical Mineral Supply Chains on Monday, October 2, 2023.

Vital to both the economy and national security, critical minerals are the lifeblood of the modern world. These essential resources power industries that drive innovation, but their supply chains is vulnerable to disruption. As nations increase their reliance on electrical energy and transition to low-carbon power sources, the demand for these minerals, including aluminum, cobalt, lithium, manganese, and nickel, has surged dramatically. This surge is projected to increase by more than 450 percent by 2050, aligning with the ambitious goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Beyond meeting their domestic clean energy needs, countries are engaged in a complex dance of geopolitics and geoeconomics, as these minerals become potential tools of influence on the global stage. What is the current landscape of the critical minerals supply chains? Which geopolitical changes will affect the global supply chain of these minerals? What strategies are nations employing to secure their access to these pivotal resources? Can the vulnerabilities exposed by the Covid-19 pandemic serve as a catalyst for redefining global mineral supply chains? Join us on Monday, October 2nd from 12 PM to 1 PM ET for a virtual discussion with Dr. Morgan Bazilian, Director of the Payne Institute and a professor of public policy at the Colorado School of Mines; The Hon. Sharon E. Burke, the Founder and President of Ecospherics, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Operational Energy; and Dr. Zongyuan Zoe Liu, Maurice R. Greenberg Fellow for China Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Please join the International Energy Forum (IEF) and the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines as we welcome Dr. Morgan Bazilian presenting Global Critical Minerals Supply & Transition Requirements at the IEF – FMF Critical Minerals Outlooks Symposium on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

The projected shortage of critical minerals required to accelerate the energy transition is an urgent priority for the global community and is expected to be a constraint to achieving shared climate goals.

More critical minerals supply is needed to enable the desired growth in electrification and the deployment of other clean energy technologies such as low-carbon hydrogen. However, the mining and metals sectors face significant constraints, including social, environmental and financial factors.

There is a need for decision makers in the energy and minerals sectors to enhance their understanding of the outlooks for demand and supply of energy and minerals, with a view to strengthening the prospects of timely, just and orderly transitions to net zero carbon emissions.

This symposium, co-hosted by the International Energy Forum and the Future Minerals Forum, will present and compare recent outlooks for critical minerals supply and processing capabilities by leading international organizations and industry sources.

It will provide an opportunity for decision makers and experts to exchange points of view on the determinants of the outlooks as well as the challenges and opportunities to advance the energy transition, energy security, and market stability.

The symposium will be conducted on Zoom to an invited audience and livestreamed to the public on IEF and FMF digital channels.
